Just days after the BCCI dismissed speculation over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, the former Indian captain let his bat do the talking before addressing the rumours himself.
Ahead of the third ODI against England at Lord’s, reports had claimed the match could be Rohit’s final appearance in India’s colours. The speculation prompted an intervention from the BCCI, with secretary Devajit Saikia categorically denying that any discussion had taken place regarding the opener’s retirement.
On the field, Rohit responded in the best possible manner, by scoring a century at Lord’s. Afterwards, he broke his silence on the speculation that had dominated headlines in the lead-up to the game.
‘Noise has been there ever since I made my debut’
Speaking after the victory, Rohit dismissed the reports, saying external speculation has been a constant throughout his international career.
“Noise has been there ever since I made my debut and till the time I’m playing, it’s always going to be there. What matters is what I do on the field. My focus is on contributing for the team, that is my focus, let the noise be there, if there is no noise then there is no fun,” Rohit said.
The century capped off an eventful week in which questions about his future overshadowed India’s preparations for the series decider.
Answering with the bat
Rather than engaging with the speculation before the match, Rohit waited until after delivering on the field.
His century reinforced the message he conveyed in his post-match remarks: his focus remains on performances, not the conversations surrounding his future.
For now, both the BCCI and Rohit himself have put the retirement rumours to rest. While speculation may continue, the veteran opener has made it clear that his priority remains the same as it has throughout his career—contributing to India’s success whenever he takes the field.
