Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement has left Kolkata Knight Riders searching for a captain ahead of the IPL 2027 season, bringing the franchise’s leadership question back into focus.
Rahane was handed the captaincy before IPL 2025 after Shreyas Iyer’s departure following KKR’s title-winning campaign in 2024. Venkatesh Iyer was named vice-captain, giving the impression that the franchise had both an experienced leader for the present and a younger player who could grow into the role over time.
The results, however, made the search for a long-term captain more complicated.
KKR won just six matches in IPL 2025 and finished eighth. Rahane had an inconsistent season with the bat, while Venkatesh did not establish himself as a future captain and was released ahead of IPL 2026.
Rahane continued as captain for another season, while head coach Abhishek Nayar spoke before IPL 2026 about giving Rinku Singh greater responsibility within the group, describing him as a player the dressing room naturally looked up to. The expectation was that Rinku would continue developing as a leader alongside Rahane.
But KKR missed the IPL 2026 playoffs again after finishing seventh with six wins in 14 matches. Rahane scored 335 runs at an average of 25.76, while Rinku managed 295 runs with two half-centuries. Neither performance strengthened KKR’s leadership picture heading into the future.
Even so, Rinku remains the strongest in-house candidate. He has already captained Meerut Mavericks to a UPT20 title and later a runners-up finish, while also leading Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket after replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
A crucial auction awaits
KKR still has alternatives. Rovman Powell brings international captaincy experience after leading West Indies in white-ball cricket, while Sunil Narine has captained Knight Riders franchises in ILT20 and Major League Cricket over the past two seasons. Both offer experience, although neither appears an obvious long-term solution.
That makes the period before the IPL 2027 auction especially significant.
The trade window remains open until a week before the auction, and reports have already linked KKR with a possible move for Hardik Pandya, although no official discussions have been confirmed.
After consecutive seasons outside the playoffs, Kolkata’s leadership decision could shape much more than the next campaign. The franchise must now decide whether to place its faith in Rinku’s development, turn to an experienced overseas leader or pursue an established Indian captain through the trade window or auction.
Rahane’s retirement has accelerated a decision KKR were always going to face. The choice they make over the coming months could determine the direction of the franchise for years to come.
