Team India’s qualification scenario for the WTC 2027 Final

The World Test Championship standings received another shake-up after Pakistan’s Test series against the West Indies, but India’s path to the 2027 final at Lord’s remains very much alive. Although Shubman Gill’s side sits fifth after nine Tests, the standings tell only part of the story.

Unlike a conventional league table, the WTC is decided by Points Percentage (PCT) rather than total points. Since teams play a different number of matches during the cycle, positions can change rapidly after every series.

India have played nine of their scheduled 18 Tests, winning four, losing four and drawing one. That leaves another nine matches and 108 points still up for grabs.

India’s Qualification Equation

India’s remaining campaign consists of two away Tests in Sri Lanka, two away Tests in New Zealand and a five-Test home Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. More than half of the points still available will come from the Australia series.

Previous WTC cycles suggest that a points percentage between 62% and 64% has generally been enough to secure a place in the final.

For India, that benchmark translates into a straightforward target: win seven of the remaining nine Tests.

A 7-2 finish would leave India with 11 wins, six defeats and one draw, taking their final points percentage to 62.96%. That figure has historically been sufficient to qualify for the WTC final.

What If India Wins Only Six?

The race becomes considerably tighter.

A record of six wins, two defeats and one draw would leave India on 59.26% PCT. At that stage, qualification would no longer depend solely on India’s results. Australia, England, South Africa and New Zealand’s campaigns would all influence the final standings, while slow over-rate penalties could also prove costly by reducing a team’s points percentage.

India’s overseas tours could shape the campaign before Australia arrive. Strong results in Sri Lanka and New Zealand would ease the pressure heading into the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Dropped points away from home, however, would leave India needing an almost flawless series against Australia.

Despite occupying fifth place, India remains in a strong position because half of its WTC campaign is still to be played. The standings are likely to change several more times before the cycle concludes.

For now, the equation remains clear: seven wins from the remaining nine Tests should be enough to book another place in the World Test Championship final.
