India’s decision to leave Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI for the first T20I of the AFG series has raised questions over the team’s plans for the 15-year-old, particularly after he produced his most convincing international innings in the previous match.
Sooryavanshi had struck a 49-ball 81 against Zimbabwe in Harare on July 26, earning Player of the Match honours and showing a different side to his game. After scoring 112 runs across his first five T20Is at an average of 22.4, the teenager demonstrated that he could adapt when conditions demanded it.
His 81 came at a strike rate of 165.30, below the extraordinary levels he has produced in the IPL, but the significance of the innings lay elsewhere. Sooryavanshi rotated the strike, respected good deliveries and resisted the temptation to attack every ball. It was a more controlled performance from a batter whose game has largely been built around aggressive strokeplay.
Interim head coach VVS Laxman had specifically praised that development, pointing to the teenager’s growing maturity and awareness.
Having finally produced the kind of innings that could have earned him a longer run, Sooryavanshi was left out of the XI for the opening match of the three-game series. Sanju Samson came into the side instead.
The decision is notable given Samson’s own recent selection journey. The wicketkeeper-batter, who played a key role in India’s 2026 T20 World Cup triumph, had been left out of the Zimbabwe tour, where selectors picked Prabhsimran Singh ahead of him. Prabhsimran did not get an opportunity in the series.
There could be a practical reason behind the change. Ishan Kishan has been managing a niggle, and Samson took over the wicketkeeping duties in the match. However, captain Shreyas Iyer did not provide an explanation for Sooryavanshi’s omission.
That lack of clarity becomes relevant with the Asian Games and a busy T20I calendar ahead. India will need to establish combinations and roles while also managing a large pool of players.
Sooryavanshi’s omission after an 81 therefore leaves a straightforward question around India’s selection thinking: was the Harare innings viewed as a one-off, or is the teenager still being given time to settle into international cricket?
For a player who has only just turned 15, patience is understandable. But with his latest performance showing that he can adapt beyond his natural attacking game, the decision to immediately leave him out makes the reasoning behind India’s combination worth watching.
