India’s 2027 World Cup could mark the end of an era for its senior stars

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be the final appearance at the tournament for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom have indicated that they will not continue until the 2031 edition. But India’s transition could extend beyond its two batting stalwarts, with questions also emerging over the long-term ODI futures of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.

Rohit and Kohli will be 40 and 39 respectively during the 2027 tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Their departure from the World Cup stage will leave India with the task of replacing two experienced batters who have played central roles in the team’s success across formats.

Hardik and Bumrah present a different situation. Both will be around 33 during the 2027 World Cup, an age at which many cricketers remain capable of performing at the highest level. However, their recurring fitness concerns could influence how India manage their workloads and whether they remain central to the ODI setup beyond the next tournament to be played in 2031.

For Hardik, the challenge is to maintain the physical demands of being a pace-bowling all-rounder. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him particularly valuable, but injuries have repeatedly interrupted his availability. India’s plans will depend on keeping him fit enough to deliver consistently across a demanding international calendar.

Bumrah’s situation is equally significant. Widely regarded as India’s leading fast bowler, he has had to manage his workload carefully across formats. Although he could still have several years of international cricket ahead of him after 2027, his ODI future will depend partly on fitness and how India balance his involvement across formats.

The 2031 World Cup is still four years beyond the next edition, making it too early to draw firm conclusions about either player’s future. Their form, fitness and personal decisions will shape whether they remain part of India’s plans.

What is certain is that India must begin preparing for a team beyond its current core. The next World Cup cycle could bring new leaders, emerging batters and a reworked bowling attack. Rohit and Kohli have already set an endpoint for their World Cup careers. Whether Hardik and Bumrah continue into the next cycle remains an open question, but their futures could be just as important in shaping India’s next generation.
