Meet Pakistan’s Adam Gilchrist, the teenager carving out his own cricketing story

A 17-year-old cricketer from Karachi has drawn attention for sharing his name and playing style with Australian great Adam Gilchrist, but the young wicketkeeper-batter has another legend he hopes to emulate.
Playing for Kamran Public School in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Talent Hunt School Cricket Championship Under-17 tournament, the teenager struck a commanding 117 off 108 balls against Happy Palace Grammar School at Jinnah College in Karachi.
His innings featured 11 fours and helped Kamran Public School post 297 for four in 40 overs. The team went on to win by 172 runs, with the youngster’s century standing out as the highlight of the contest.
The similarities with the former Australia wicketkeeper-batter are striking. Both are left-handed batters who keep wickets, and both share an attacking approach that can make them influential at the top of the order. The Australian Gilchrist represented his country between 1996 and 2008 and became one of the most destructive wicketkeeper-batters of his generation.
The youngster’s name has its own backstory. His mother chose Adam as his first name, while his father, a cricket enthusiast who admired the Australian great, added Gilchrist to honour his favourite player.
Yet the teenager has chosen a different role model for his own cricketing journey. He looks up to former Sri Lanka captain and wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara, known for his consistency and ability to play long innings across formats.
Sangakkara’s left-handed batting and wicketkeeping background make him a natural source of inspiration for the young Pakistani cricketer. While his name has brought him instant recognition, the century against Happy Palace Grammar School has given him a performance of his own to build on.
The PCB’s school-level talent hunt programme is designed to give young players a platform to showcase their abilities. For the Karachi teenager, the immediate task will be to turn this attention into consistent performances and continue developing his game.
For now, Adam Gilchrist has made headlines with a name cricket fans already know. His 117, however, is a reminder that he is beginning to create a story of his own.
