According to Android Authority, several owners report that the glasses capture conversations without ever being activated. The glasses are supposed to stay in sleep mode until the user says “Hey Meta.” This is similar to how Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri work. But some owners say the glasses wake up and record without that phrase being spoken. In effect, the devices are monitoring their surroundings without permission.
One user wrote on Reddit that they saw the same behavior on three different pairs of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, including second- and third-generation models. The user said the issue deserves a serious technical investigation. They added that customers should not have to wonder whether private conversations are being captured when they have not switched on the AI assistant.
The report adds to existing privacy concerns around the glasses. They have become a popular tool for people who want to record video discreetly, including bullies and influencers. That ability earned them the nickname “pervert glasses.”
Reaction online has been sarcastic. One Redditor joked that a company that makes money by invading privacy was invading privacy again.
Meta has responded briefly to Android Authority. A spokesperson said the issue “has been resolved.” The spokesperson added that people can manage, review and delete voice logs of their Meta AI interactions through settings at any time.
The statement gave no further detail. Whether it will reassure owners remains to be seen.
