UAE honours Indian pilot Smit Machchhar for bravery during Flydubai cockpit emergency

The United Arab Emirates has honoured Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and members of the flydubai crew for their actions during a cockpit emergency on September 30, when the captain was seriously injured but helped enable an intervention that protected passengers and secured the aircraft.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on the crew members involved in the incident. The recognition acknowledges their courage and professionalism in responding to the emergency.

The honours were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chairman of Dubai’s Executive Council. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed also received the crew members on Tuesday in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

According to the report, Machchhar, despite being seriously injured, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing crew members and passengers to intervene. Their response helped bring the situation under control and avert a potential tragedy.

The recognition follows international tributes to the Indian captain. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his actions, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump also commended his bravery.

Israel has separately announced a civilian bravery award for Machchhar, which is expected to be presented after he recovers from his injuries.

Sheikh Hamdan had visited the captain during his treatment on October 3, praising his courage, sense of responsibility and concern for human life. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority had also commended Machchhar, the crew and passengers who assisted during the incident.

The UAE leadership said the crew’s actions reflected the importance of protecting human life and maintaining aviation safety. The crew members expressed gratitude to the President for the recognition.
