Amit Shah promises Uniform Civil Code in UP if BJP returns to power in 2027

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttar Pradesh if the Bharatiya Janata Party returns to power in the 2027 Assembly elections.

Addressing the Uttar Pradesh BJP state executive committee meeting on Friday, Shah told party members that a BJP government would introduce the UCC in the state. He pointed out that the code had already been implemented in several states and said Uttar Pradesh would follow if the party secured another term.

The announcement comes as the BJP begins preparing its political and organisational strategy ahead of next year’s Assembly elections. The daylong meeting brought together the state Cabinet, BJP office-bearers and representatives from regional and district-level units, with Shah attending as the chief guest.

Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary described the upcoming election as a contest between “vinash aur vikas” (destruction and development) and “jatiwad aur rashtrawad” (casteism and nationalism).

In his address, Chaudhary urged party workers to respond to opposition criticism with facts and avoid adopting a defensive approach. He accused opposition parties, including the Congress and Samajwadi Party, of relying on allegations rather than presenting policies or programmes.

Chaudhary also asked BJP leaders to assess their organisational readiness ahead of the election. He outlined four areas for introspection: whether booth-level workers were active, booth committees were functioning regularly, office-bearers were fulfilling their responsibilities, and local leaders were maintaining contact with people.

The state BJP president called on party workers to engage with different sections of society, including upper castes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, backward communities, farmers, young people and women. He also emphasised the importance of listening to party workers and maintaining regular communication with them.

Shah’s UCC announcement places the proposed policy among the BJP’s stated commitments ahead of the Uttar Pradesh election. However, the party’s return to power remains a condition for its implementation.
