In the Fairwork India Ratings 2024, mobility giants Ola, Uber, and logistics firm Porter scored zero points, indicating the worst working conditions for gig workers among the platforms assessed. The report, compiled by IIIT-Bangalore and Oxford University, examined 11 major platforms across sectors like transportation, logistics, and food delivery, including Amazon Flex, Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket.
The evaluation was based on five key principles: Fair Pay, Fair Conditions, Fair Contract, Fair Management, and Fair Representation. Only BigBasket and Urban Company scored the first point under Fair Pay for ensuring workers earned above the local minimum wage after costs. Despite Swiggy, Urban Company, Zomato, and BigBasket scoring relatively well with six points each, no platform fully met all five principles.
The Fairwork India Ratings highlight significant gaps in working conditions within India’s growing platform economy, emphasizing the urgent need for better labor practices in gig work environments.
