The Big Bash League (BBL) is set to break new ground this December by becoming the first overseas franchise T20 competition to stage a match in India.
The 2026-27 BBL season will begin with defending champions Perth Scorchers taking on Melbourne Renegades at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, marking the tournament’s first-ever fixture outside Australia.
The announcement was made jointly by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the final day of Modi’s three-day visit to Australia, highlighting the growing sporting ties between the two nations.
A first for the BBL and Indian cricket
While the Indian Premier League (IPL) has previously taken matches to South Africa and the UAE due to extraordinary circumstances, no foreign domestic cricket league has ever staged an official match in India.
That makes the BBL opener a landmark event for both competitions.
The Chennai fixture is currently planned as a one-off event and will serve as the centrepiece of a week-long Australian cultural festival across India. Melbourne Renegades will treat the match as one of their designated home fixtures before both teams return to Australia to continue the remainder of the tournament.
A gateway to bigger opportunities
Beyond launching the new BBL season, Cricket Australia hopes the fixture can strengthen cricket’s commercial relationship with India.
BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson acknowledged that hosting an overseas match could eventually open conversations around the possibility of an IPL fixture being played in Australia if the BCCI ever considered taking regular-season games abroad.
Although no such plans currently exist, Dobson said Australian cricket would welcome discussions if the opportunity arose in the future.
The initiative has been supported by both governments, with funding coming from Cricket Australia as well as a grant from the Centre of Australia-India Relations.
Why Chennai?
Chennai emerged as a natural choice for the historic occasion.
The city has one of India’s most passionate cricket fan bases, while the MA Chidambaram Stadium is among the country’s most iconic venues. Cricket Australia is targeting a full house at the 35,000-capacity ground and believes local support for the BBL has grown steadily over the years.
The fixture is also expected to feature several Australian stars, including T20I captain Mitchell Marsh, depending on national team commitments.
Cricket Australia acknowledged that scheduling an overseas match during a packed domestic season presents logistical challenges. Both squads will travel to India immediately after the Sheffield Shield round concludes before returning home to resume their BBL campaigns.
The BBL’s decision reflects a broader trend in global sport, with leagues increasingly taking marquee events to overseas markets to expand their audience.
Australia’s National Rugby League has already made Las Vegas the venue for its season opener, while other sporting competitions continue to explore international expansion.
For the BBL, India represents its biggest opportunity outside Australia.
The league already enjoys a sizeable following among Indian cricket fans, and staging a match in Chennai offers Cricket Australia a chance to strengthen that connection while introducing the tournament to a wider audience.
Whether the initiative remains a one-off event or becomes a regular feature will likely depend on its success.
For now, the season opener promises to be a historic moment- one that could reshape how domestic cricket leagues think about expanding beyond their own borders.
