LinkedIn has removed one of its AI writing tools and introduced a new way for users to report low-quality AI-generated content. The professional networking platform is stepping back from features that automatically rewrote user posts, acknowledging that its own AI tools contributed to making the feed cluttered with generic, hollow content.
The move comes after months of user complaints about AI spam taking over LinkedIn feeds. Many posts are either entirely AI-generated or heavily polished by AI writing assistants, often delivering motivational platitudes or fabricated career stories with no substance behind them. Users reported that their news feeds became harder to navigate because of the volume of automated content that looked professional but communicated nothing real.
LinkedIn’s rewrite tool was designed to help professionals improve their writing by suggesting alternative phrasings. In practice, it became a shortcut that encouraged mass production of content. When a button makes words sound better instantly, many users pressed it reflexively, transforming authentic workplace discussion into corporate word soup. The company has now decided that removing the tool is more important than keeping it available.
The new report button lets users flag posts they believe are low-quality AI content. LinkedIn says it will analyze these reports to understand which types of AI-generated material frustrate users most, and will build filters based on that feedback. The company promised additional measures are coming, though it provided no timeline or specifics.
What distinguishes LinkedIn’s response is its public acknowledgment of the problem. Most tech companies absorb criticism quietly and make changes behind closed doors. LinkedIn chose transparency, suggesting the AI spam issue reached a volume where ignoring it became unsustainable. User frustration became visible enough to damage the platform’s reputation.
However, the core issue persists. LinkedIn’s business model rewards engagement above all else. AI-generated posts often perform well because they trigger reactions and comments. Until that incentive structure changes, tools and report buttons can only manage the symptom, not cure the disease. A user might report spam, but the algorithm will still promote content that drives clicks.
LinkedIn’s acknowledgment is meaningful because it shows at least one major platform recognizing that flooding users with AI output was a mistake. Whether these changes actually reduce AI clutter depends on how seriously the company applies its filters and whether it moves beyond treating symptoms toward addressing why AI spam became profitable in the first place.
