India’s hopes of returning from Sri Lanka with a valuable World Test Championship boost have suffered a major setback even before the series begins. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the two-Test tour after failing to recover fully from the knee injury he aggravated during the ODI series against England.
While Sri Lankan conditions are expected to favour spin, Bumrah’s absence extends far beyond losing India’s best fast bowler. It forces the team management to rethink the pace attack, the balance of the XI and how they manage an important series without their biggest match-winner.
A cautious call with the future in mind
Bumrah had initially been included in India’s squad subject to clearing a fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. The expectation was that he could feature in at least one of the two Tests.
That plan has now been shelved. According to reports, the injury suffered in Cardiff aggravated an existing knee issue, prompting the medical staff to advise further rest rather than risk another setback.
The decision reflects India’s long-term priorities. With a tour of New Zealand, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the 2027 ODI World Cup all on the horizon, the management has chosen not to rush one of its most valuable players back into action.
Finding the right bowling combination
Bumrah’s absence leaves Mohammed Siraj as the leader of the pace attack, but questions remain over who partners him.
Prasidh Krishna offers bounce and extra pace but has traditionally been more effective on quicker surfaces. Gurnoor Brar brings raw pace and a different angle, while uncapped seamer Auqib Nabi has been drafted into the squad after two outstanding Ranji Trophy seasons.
The Jammu and Kashmir pacer claimed 104 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy campaigns, including 60 in the title-winning 2025-26 season. He also impressed for India A in Sri Lanka, taking six wickets in two four-day matches.
Whether India hands Nabi an immediate debut or prefer the experience of Prasidh remains one of the biggest selection calls of the tour.
Complicating matters further is Washington Sundar’s injury, which has already ruled him out of the first Test. His absence reduces India’s lower-order batting depth and limits the balance the team can achieve.
India remains fifth in the World Test Championship standings, making every Test increasingly significant. Winning in Sri Lanka without Bumrah will require more than simply replacing one bowler. It will demand the rest of the attack step up quickly, because no team truly replaces a player of Bumrah’s quality.
