England’s cricket board has reappointed Joe Root as Test captain, bringing back the 33-year-old batter to lead the team after stepping down in 2022. Root will replace Ben Stokes, who took over the role in 2022 but has decided to move away from the captaincy to focus on his playing career. The England and Wales Cricket Board also announced that Brendon McCullum, the current coach, will be replaced by Stephen Fleming, a former New Zealand captain, as the new Test coach starting after the Champions Trophy in February 2025.
Root’s return marks a significant shift in England’s Test cricket leadership. He had captained England from 2017 to 2022 but stepped down after five years, citing the toll of managing the role while playing. During his first captaincy spell, England struggled in Test cricket, winning only 27 of 64 matches. In a recent statement, Root said that his brief time working with McCullum last month convinced him the job was worth taking on again. “The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job,” Root said. “After enjoying a brief taste of it again working with Brendon McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward.”
Stephen Fleming, who captained New Zealand across all three formats and is known for his tactical intelligence, will take over from McCullum. Fleming has experience as a coach and cricket administrator. McCullum, who took charge in 2022 and led England to the T20 World Cup victory that year, will remain involved with the England cricket setup in a limited capacity.
The decision comes at a time when English Test cricket is undergoing transition. Root has played 152 Tests for England and remains one of the country’s finest batters. His return as captain signals the board’s confidence in his ability to guide younger players through what will be a challenging period of rebuilding.
