Infosys is planning to transition between a quarter and a third of its workforce into specialist roles and build a team of around 6,000 frontier engineers, according to people who attended a recent company event, as reported by The Times of India.
The Bengaluru-based IT services company, which has more than 320,000 employees, is making the shift as AI puts pressure on traditional billing models based on the number of employees deployed on client projects. A presentation by an Infosys executive showed that 270,000 employees have already received AI training, while around 80,000 are currently working with coding tools, according to the report.
The company is now looking to expand its specialist talent base as AI reshapes the skills and roles required across the IT services sector. In April 2026, Infosys CEO Salil Parekh had said the company had not carried out layoffs in the previous year and did not expect any, emphasising reskilling as its primary approach to managing AI’s impact on jobs. At the time, Infosys also said it planned to hire around 20,000 fresh graduates, with employees being trained in both traditional coding methods and AI tools, including the evaluation of AI-generated code.
Parekh had also said in April that AI was already contributing around 5.5 per cent of Infosys’ revenue, as the company expanded its collaborations with AI firms and developed internal platforms for AI-led software development.
The latest specialist workforce plan marks another step in how Infosys is preparing its employees for an industry in which AI is reshaping both the nature of technology work and the skills companies require going forward.
