Mayank Yadav’s return against Zimbabwe capped nearly two years of rehabilitation and recovery. His match-winning spell of 2 for 18 in Harare, which earned him the Player of the Match award, marked the end of a difficult phase that had interrupted the rise of one of Indian cricket’s most exciting fast bowlers.
Born in Delhi’s Moti Nagar, Mayank developed a reputation for express pace from a young age. Training at the renowned Sonnet Cricket Club, he progressed through Delhi’s cricket system before making his List A debut in December 2021 and his T20 debut in October 2022. Despite limited domestic appearances, his pace had already attracted attention.
IPL Breakthrough
Lucknow Super Giants signed Mayank for ₹20 lakh ahead of the 2023 IPL season, but a hamstring injury ruled him out before he could make his debut. After months of rehabilitation, he returned through domestic cricket and the Deodhar Trophy, where he reminded everyone why he was regarded as one of India’s most promising fast bowlers.
His long-awaited IPL debut finally came in 2024 against Punjab Kings. Mayank claimed 3 for 27 while regularly crossing the 150 km/h mark, including a delivery timed at 155.8 km/h. He followed it up with figures of 3 for 14 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, clocking 156.7 km/h, the fastest ball of IPL 2024. Those performances made him the first player in tournament history to win the Player of the Match award in each of his first two IPL matches.
The sensational start earned him an India call-up, and he made his T20I debut against Bangladesh in October 2024, beginning what looked like the next phase of a rapidly rising career.
The Rise Hits a Roadblock
That momentum was short-lived. Persistent back and side strain injuries forced Mayank out of action soon after his international debut. Nearly two years passed before he returned to India’s T20I side, turning what seemed like a dream start into a prolonged battle with rehabilitation.
His comeback finally came against Zimbabwe in Harare. Mayank struck with the very first ball of the match by dismissing Brian Bennett and finished with figures of 2 for 18, earning the Player of the Match award.
Reflecting on the journey, he admitted the layoff had been mentally challenging, especially at such a young age, but said the dream of playing for India kept him motivated throughout.
He said, “I was only 22-23 years old at that time, so it always affected me that I had to go through so much at such a young age.”
For Mayank Yadav, the spell in Harare was more than a successful comeback. It marked the restart of a career that had promised so much, paused unexpectedly, and now has another opportunity to fulfil its potential.
