The turmoil surrounding Pakistan cricket could trigger another major shake-up, with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly preparing to remove senior selector Aaqib Javed and former pacer Wahab Riaz from their current roles.
According to a PTI report, Naqvi has lost patience after a difficult period for Pakistan cricket and is considering changes to the national selection committee in the coming days. The move would come shortly after a series of drastic decisions following Pakistan’s 0-3 Test series defeat in England.
Aaqib was reportedly at the centre of the controversial changes made to the Test squad after Pakistan’s defeat at Lord’s. Seven players were sent home, while head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were also removed from their positions. Mike Hesson subsequently took charge of the Test side for the third match, with Ashley Noffke joining as bowling coach.
The changes failed to produce an immediate turnaround as England completed an eight-wicket victory at Edgbaston to seal a 3-0 series sweep. Pakistan also slipped to ninth in the ICC rankings, adding to the pressure on the PCB leadership.
An internal source quoted in the report said Naqvi now believes “radical measures” are needed to stop the losing streak and bring greater stability to Pakistan cricket.
Aaqib has also faced criticism for his involvement in repeated changes to Pakistan’s coaching staff and captaincy structure. His reported removal would therefore mark another significant change in the country’s cricket administration.
Wahab is also expected to leave his current position. The former Pakistan fast bowler, who is serving as a mentor with the women’s team, could be released after the Asian Games campaign in Japan later this month.
The report also sheds light on the coaching changes made during the England tour. The PCB had reportedly been encouraged to make Mike Hesson an all-format option after the New Zealander showed interest in taking charge of the men’s team across formats.
Hesson, however, is believed to have set conditions for taking on the red-ball role. He wants sufficient time to establish his plans, a clearly defined timeframe and assurances that his decision-making will not face interference.
Meanwhile, the PCB is reportedly negotiating with foreign coaches for the women’s team, with a new appointment expected after the Asian Games.
If the reported moves go through, Pakistan cricket could undergo another substantial restructuring within weeks of the changes that followed the Lord’s defeat.
