The United States launched strikes on more than 80 Iranian military targets early Wednesday after three commercial vessels were reportedly attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
According to US Central Command, the operation targeted Iranian air defence systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti ship missile capabilities and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats operating near the strategic waterway. The US described the strikes as a direct response to attacks on commercial shipping in international waters.
The military action came just weeks after the United States and Iran reached an interim agreement intended to reduce hostilities and keep commercial traffic moving safely through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has accused Washington of violating that understanding, while the US says Tehran’s attacks on merchant vessels triggered the latest retaliation.
The renewed conflict has unsettled global markets. Oil prices rose as investors weighed the possibility of further disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries nearly one fifth of the world’s traded oil. Shipping agencies have also issued fresh advisories as commercial vessels continue to navigate the region under heightened security concerns.
The latest developments highlight how quickly tensions in the Gulf can affect global trade. Even limited attacks on commercial shipping have the potential to increase transport costs, insurance premiums and uncertainty across energy markets.
With both countries exchanging military action once again and the interim agreement under pressure, attention is now shifting to whether diplomatic efforts can prevent a broader disruption to one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
