On paper, India has the stronger squad heading into the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Recent performances, however, suggest the hosts could make life difficult for Shreyas Iyer’s side.
Team India arrives in Harare after a disappointing tour of the UK, where they failed to win a T20I against Ireland or England. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, have built momentum over the past year with a string of encouraging results, including a memorable victory over Australia at the T20 World Cup and a competitive home series against Bangladesh.
Led by Sikandar Raza and powered by emerging players such as Brian Bennett, Zimbabwe has shown they can challenge stronger opponents. Their performances have given the team confidence ahead of another meeting with Team India, who is searching for consistency in the shortest format.
World Cup campaign showed Zimbabwe’s progress
Zimbabwe’s biggest statement came at the 2026 T20 World Cup.
They stunned Australia by 23 runs in Colombo, with Brian Bennett scoring an unbeaten 64 before Blessing Muzarabani claimed 4 for 17 to bowl Australia out for 146. The result sent Zimbabwe into the Super Eights and knocked Australia out in the group stage.
The hosts also pushed India harder than many expected. Chasing 257, Bennett struck an unbeaten 97 off 59 balls, helping Zimbabwe finish on 184 for six. India won by 72 runs, but Zimbabwe’s batting displayed the confidence to take on one of the strongest attacks in the tournament.
Zimbabwe have carried that form into their recent home season. Although they lost the T20I series against Bangladesh, they won both the ODI series and the one-off Test. They also opened the T20Is with a 32-run victory, with Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava once again leading the bowling attack.
Captain Sikandar Raza believes those performances have given Zimbabwe every reason to back themselves.
“Both countries will have an equal chance in this series. Zimbabwe has been playing very consistent and very entertaining cricket,” Raza said.
The veteran all-rounder also pointed out that both teams are rebuilding.
“India is going through a transition and Zimbabwe is also going to have a little bit of transition happening. I don’t see it as a one-sided series.”
India’s squad still has greater depth and experience, but Zimbabwe’s recent performances suggest they are capable of making this a competitive series.
