Brazilian man sells belongings, travels 2,000 km to meet dream woman- she was AI

A 49-year-old bricklayer from Brazil sold his belongings and rode a bus across the country to meet a woman he trusted. She was an AI-generated character.

Edimar Rocha Martins, from Imperatriz in Maranhão, travelled more than 2,000 kilometres to meet “Jéssica Oliveira.” The account, known as “Jessica Fazendeira,” showed a rural woman looking for a partner to share her farm. Her videos offered financial stability to the right man. The account had more than 300,000 followers.

Martins reached Belo Horizonte on October 11. He knew no one in the city and found no woman. According to Brazilian reports, he learned that the person he trusted was an AI character built for engagement and sales.

The account’s administrator later posted a video admitting the character was AI-generated. The administrator was not named. They denied ever speaking privately with Martins or inviting him to travel. They said the account existed to drive engagement and sales. How Martins came to believe he had a personal connection is unclear.

Martins turned to local authorities and social services. He received food, a place to bathe and help getting home. Minas Gerais police had no record of a formal complaint when the report was published. The reporting does not show that the operator targeted Martins or ran a conventional romance scam.

No regulatory or legal response to the case has been reported. The article says this shows a gap in who is accountable for synthetic personas on social platforms.

It also warns that follower counts and polished videos prove production quality, not identity. It advises a live video call before making any major decision about an online contact.

Martins said he hopes to return to Belo Horizonte one day and find a real partner there.
