Trump accuses Zelenskyy of prolonging Russia-Ukraine war

Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of deliberately prolonging the Russia-Ukraine war, days after Kyiv launched one of its largest drone strikes on Moscow. Trump’s criticism came as he defended his decision to waive sanctions against Russia, saying the move was necessary to enable peace talks. The accusation marks a sharp deterioration in relations between the US president and Ukraine’s leadership at a critical moment in the conflict.

Zelenskyy responded by speaking with US envoys but expressed frustration over Trump’s approach. The Ukrainian president particularly criticised a recent diesel fuel deal between the US and Russia, arguing it would provide Moscow with revenue to fund its military operations. This dispute over whether to maintain economic pressure on Russia versus pursuing immediate negotiations has become a central point of tension. Zelenskyy’s concerns reflect Ukraine’s fear that reducing sanctions could weaken its bargaining position and prolong the conflict rather than end it.

The disagreement reveals fundamentally different views on how to achieve peace. Trump’s approach prioritises quick negotiations and is willing to ease pressure on Russia as a negotiating tool. Ukraine, meanwhile, believes maintaining maximum economic and military pressure on Moscow is the only way to force Russia to accept terms that preserve Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. For Ukraine, any sanctions relief without Russian concessions risks emboldening Putin to continue the war.

The strained relationship carries immediate consequences for Ukraine’s military capacity. US aid to Ukraine has been crucial for its defence against Russian invasion. Questions over future American support now loom large as Trump and Zelenskyy remain at odds over war strategy. If the US reduces military assistance or fails to replenish ammunition and weapons stocks, Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defence effort would face serious challenges. European allies have warned they lack the industrial capacity to fully replace American support.

The timing of this dispute, following Kyiv’s significant drone strike on Moscow, suggests the conflict remains far from resolution through military means. Ukraine continues demonstrating capacity to strike deep into Russian territory, yet Trump’s inclination toward quick negotiations suggests the US may not support prolonged Ukrainian resistance. For ordinary Ukrainians, this diplomatic crisis translates to uncertainty about whether their country will receive the sustained international backing needed to withstand Russian pressure or whether peace will be negotiated in ways that compromise their security.
