England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt chose not to discuss her international future after England’s seven-wicket defeat to Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, as emotions ran high following the loss at Lord’s.
England’s hopes of ending a 17-year wait for the T20 World Cup title were dashed as Australia completed an unbeaten campaign to lift a record-extending seventh trophy. For Sciver-Brunt, the disappointment was accompanied by the realization that she may never play another home World Cup.
The 33-year-old walked out for the national anthem carrying her 15-month-old son Theo, a moment that left her emotional after the match.
Asked about her future in international cricket, the England skipper declined to make any decisions, saying she had not yet thought about what comes next.
The tournament proved to be an emotional rollercoaster for Sciver-Brunt. After leading England to wins over Sri Lanka and Ireland, a recurring calf injury forced her to miss much of the group stage, putting her participation in the knockout rounds in doubt.
However, she returned in style, scoring a match-winning 75 against South Africa in the semi-final before top-scoring with another half-century in the final, although it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.
Reflecting on the campaign, Sciver-Brunt admitted managing the injury throughout the tournament had been challenging.
“It’s been up and down, to be honest. Trying to nurse an injury during a World Cup hasn’t been easy,” she said.
The all-rounder revealed she tried to stay positive around the squad despite the frustration of missing matches.
“I always wanted to remain positive around the group. Missing those games was pretty tough.”
Despite England falling short in the final, Sciver-Brunt took pride in her comeback.
“I probably surprised myself coming back in that semi-final and being able to do what I did. I’m immensely proud of what I’ve been able to do.”
While England’s title drought continues, Sciver-Brunt’s fighting performances and emotional leadership ensured she remained one of the standout figures of the tournament, even as uncertainty surrounds the next chapter of her international career.
