England Eyes Fresh Start Against Australia in Women’s T20 World Cup Final

With a new coach and captain at the helm, England believe last year’s Ashes humiliation is firmly behind them as they prepare to face Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s. The hosts will also be aiming to end a 17-year wait for the T20 world title, having last won the tournament in its inaugural edition in 2009.

England secured their place in the final after a convincing semi-final win over South Africa and will now take on an unbeaten Australian side. The rivalry carries added significance after England endured a crushing 16-0 Ashes whitewash in 2025, a result that led to major changes within the team. Charlotte Edwards replaced Jon Lewis as head coach, while Nat Sciver-Brunt took over the captaincy from Heather Knight.

Vice-captain Charlie Dean believes those setbacks no longer matter.

“We’ve not played Australia in six months, so it feels like a fresh start for us,” Dean said after England’s semi-final victory.

While acknowledging Australia’s quality, Dean insisted previous meetings would have little influence on the outcome.

“They’re a brilliant side, but on a final day it’s whoever turns up and plays the best cricket.”

Sciver-Brunt enters the final in fine form after producing a match-winning 75 off 47 balls against South Africa. Returning from a calf injury that kept her out for much of the group stage, the England skipper rescued her side after an early collapse and guided them into the title decider.

“The way we’ve gone about our cricket in this tournament is the way that we can beat them,” Sciver-Brunt said. “Standing up and going toe to toe with them is the way.”

England will also draw confidence from their familiarity with Lord’s, where Sciver-Brunt was part of the side that won the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup. Dean believes that experience will help the younger members of the squad cope with the pressure of a home final.

Having experienced several major defeats since her England debut in 2021, including the 2022 ODI World Cup final and the Ashes whitewash, Dean feels the current squad has matured significantly.

“I think we’re building something. We’ve got more experience now, we understand our games better, and I feel it’s the most confident I’ve been in an England shirt.”

With both teams unbeaten in the tournament, England will hope their new era under Edwards and Sciver-Brunt can finally end Australia’s recent dominance and deliver a long-awaited T20 World Cup triumph in front of a home crowd.
